hank you for all the emails, support & patience!
To all registered athletes
and those still considering- We are ready to roll.. We really appreciate that you have
decided to join our first ever foray into multi-sports.
Reading all your emails and
returning phone calls makes me think that the field may be as high as 50% First Timers.
THAT is terrific!!! We have dedicated ourselves in regards to safety and organization.
Here is just a sample of what is planned:
* 13 Fairfield Police hired for major intersections and more available on duty.
* 7 Police Explorers to help with other intersections
* 20+Volunteers to cover other roads and hot spots
* 25 Police barriers rented from Public Works
* 65 Cones rented for the bike course
* 30 Cones for the run course
* 1 mile of caution tape (give or take a few...)
* 20+Volunteers for registration and transition area
* 50 signs designed for this event for direction and caution/warning to motorists (roads
can NOT be closed)
* 1 Water stop on the run course
* #1 Immediate access to emergency services thru the police
* all- of you!
Naturally you'll need your
own water bottles for your bike, YOUR HELMET!, and a desire to have fun! Don't let
yourself get intimidated by what you think you are lacking in experience- there will be a
lot of us out there who are ALL NEW to this- including the Director! Food includes Panera
Bakery products, bananas, grilled 'dogs & 'burgs, & more. Water- Thanks to
Westy Storage.
Here are some answers to questions I have been getting:
*Better to be here before 6:30am to park, check out your bike/equipment, get your
registration numbers, shirt, goody bag, and settle in.
*Transition area- secure and bikes in racks
*'Chip timed' by Bill Sherry and Super Race Systems
*You'll have to fix your own flats on the course, sorry
*We should have a 'sag' truck in case of a problem you and your 2-wheeled chariot can
climb aboard.
*We will have a 'info session' around 7:10am at the transition area for those in need
*BREAKING AWAY BICYCLES will be there for your needs
*Rain or shine YES-THE REALITY IS THAT WEATHER IS UNPREDICTABLE! So get here no matter
what it is doing at your house! "Scattered" showers are predicted- and
that means more 'good' possibility then not!
Folks- we have people
registered from ages 12 to 68 so far! We will give awards to the top M & F as well as
3 deep to age groups 13 and under, 14-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54;

HELMETS ARE
MANDATORY - NO RIDER WILL BE PERMITTED TO COMPETE WITHOUT ONE!
HERE ARE THE RULES: SERIOUS STUFF
All USAT
rules are in effect. Go to http://www.usatriathlon.org
for a complete list of USAT rules.
Rules are enforced by race management so please FOLLOW THEM to avoid penalties and DQ's
(not Dairy Queen).
Below are some of the most frequently violated rules:
HELMETS ARE
MANDATORY - NO RIDER WILL BE PERMITTED TO COMPETE WITHOUT ONE!
Helmets are
mandatory while riding the bike (BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER the race). Helmet must be
buckled or strapped on. This is a DISQUALIFICATION penalty and a major safety issue.
Please have your helmet on and buckled before unracking your bike and re-rack your bike
before unbuckling it after the bike leg. We have had several upset participants who have
been disqualified because they unbuckled right before dismounting their bikes.
ALL
PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE THEIR BIB NUMBER ON FRONT OF THEIR CLOTHING/body. No one will be
allowed to access the start or transition areas without their numbered bib. Fasten it
securely and obviously DON'T LOSE IT!! Plus if we have a photographer they won't know who you are without it.
YOUR BIKE
MUST HAVE THE BIB NUMBER AS WELL. NO BIKES IN THE TRANSITION AREA WITHOUT THAT BIB NUMBER.
We provide all bibs and pins. WE FULLY SUPPORT PIN RECYCLING.
Headphones
are not allowed at any time. This is a 2 MINUTE time
penalty on the run and a DQ on the bike.
OBVIOUSLY NO
PETS EITHER. No drafting will be allowed while on the bike. THERE IS A 5 MINUTE PENALTY
FOR REPORTED/VERIFIED DRAFTING.
Pass only on
the left while on the bike. No blocking - Stay to the Right side except when passing. Do
no cross the yellow line around corners on the bike AND STAY IN ALL CONED ROADS. TRAFFIC
IS FLOWING, THE ROADS ARE OPEN. OVER 10 FAIRFIELD POLICE ON DUTY! CYCLIST MUST OBEY ALL
APPLICABLE TRAFFIC LAWS.
No outside
assistance will be allowed in the transition area. You may not leave anything on the
course (i.e. water bottles, gel wrappers). Everything should return with you to the
transition area. Transition area will be closely monitored and all equipment/bikes must be
placed in the correct position according to your bib number and corresponding rack. NO
WATER STOP ON THE RUN COURSE. ALL WATER AT THE TRANSITION AREA. Bring a bottle for the
bike, obviously! And sunscreen wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Not
So Serious Stuff:
WETSUITS: NOT
APPLICABLE- this is not a triathlon and it will not be raining! However if it is a really
nice one and you want to show it off I guess it's up to you...but it might get hot. THIS
IS OUR SECOND DUATHLON AND WE WANT TO GET IT PERFECT! The 250 limit is so that we (and the
police) can get a feel for what this course can handle and allow more next year!
COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Duathlon
Coordinator Marty Schaivone has designed this course with all levels of participants in
mind. It has a small hill on the double loop bike course but is flat for 10.5 of the 11
miles. Beginners will find it easy, intermediates and experienced will find it fast. We
have designed this and coordinated with police with your safety in mind. And as for the
run course- it's slight rise occurs in the first half mile so that means a downhill and
flat finish! You run the same course twice- before and after the bike.
The
transition area takes advantage of the spacious Metro North RR lot on the Southbound side
of the Fairfield RR Station.
We have full
use of the Tomlinson Middle School across the street for bathrooms, showers, and just in
case of funky weather. Food and awards will be there.
RUN 2 MI/ BIKE 11 MI/ RUN 2 MI
Run Route:
From the middle of the RR lot, under Unquowa Rd bridge, out onto Unquowa in front of
Tomlinson School, North thru 4 way stop at Barlow Rd (police on duty) to right turn on
Winton Rd- Right onto Round Hill Rd, thru 4 way stop at Barlow Rd. (police here too) Right
onto Papermill, Left onto Unquowa, follow route back to transition area.
Great news - Mill
Plain Road has a new asphalt surface!
Bike Route:
Out RR station lot in the opposite direction to Mill Plain, Right on Mill Plain, under Rte
95 (police on duty at all ramps and major intersections) fork left onto Sturges Rd., merge
onto Bronson after the Mill River bridge, take Bronson North to the fork-right on
Hillside, first Right on Hills Farm Rd, this merges into Brookside, Take Right at 4 way
stop onto Mill Plain Rd., follow Mill plain Rd. straight and go through the Unquowa Rd
intersection. Take a right onto Mill Plain Green - this short street goes to Sturges Rd,
where you will go right and pick up the course again for the second loop. THE SECOND
TIME Second time down Mill Plain Rd we go STRAIGHT ACROSS Unquowa Rd at the 4 way stop and
stay on Mill Plain Rd. all the way Back to the left turn into the RR station lot.
These 2
courses are fairly flat and should be PERFECT for a first time Du-Athlete and/or Family!
Try something new- we think you will love it!
