Kenyan John Mwai Beats Record Marathon Field One Second Shy of Tying Course Record

HARTFORD (CT) -- John Mwai, one of a contingent of Kenyans, beat the largest marathon field ever to run the Aetna U.S. Healthcare Greater Hartford Marathon Saturday morning under summer-like temperatures that, were they a degree or two cooler, may have enabled several runners to beat the course record.

Mwai beat Tomix Costa of Brazil by 30 seconds, and missed establishing a new course record by two seconds. In 1997 Tanzania's Peter Simon ran Hartford in 2:16:59. 5,900 runners began the city-to-the-country-and-back race as the temperature crept into the 70's. Last year, about 4,600 runners ran Hartford. Charles Subano of Kenya ran third at 2:18:10.

Olena Plastynina of Russia (2:44:21) defeated Alena Vinitskaya (2:44:44) of Belarus in the women's race.

Runners from 45 states and a dozen countries competed before the largest crowds to ever watch a Southern New England marathon, race director Beth Shluger noted. 'Parties and boisterous fans lined many of the roads this year,' she said. The racecourse runs through four towns and over the Connecticut River during the area's 'peak foliage' season. The Hartford Marathon is now in its seventh year.
