In true fat ass tradition everything about the First Annual Fairfield County Fatass 50K was ad hoc; from publicity, to start/finish location, to "aid" stations and marking. Runners commented that there should be more than roughly 21K of trail with the remainder on roads. All were treated to a clear, slightly breezy day to follow an out and back course through newly acquired Trout Brook Valley open space and 4 towns. Winner Kevin Shelton-Smith entered on the spur of the moment and ran a 4:01 even after a wrong turn sent him an extra half-mile or so. Local masters stalwart and women's leader Carol Kane opted for this race over snowshoe race 4 hours away. She was followed closely by co-race founder Kim Hooper. Walker Andy Cable turned in a solid 6:51. Ultra virgin and cofounder Ed Dyroff ran a tough last 4 miles with ultra vet Joe Schutz. The only non-finishers planned to go shorter. Everyone seemed pleased by the results. Now RD Jason Howard can go run the course and plan for next year. Race Officials
