The race helps feed Thanksgiving dinners to one person in need for each runner and volunteer at Saturday's marathon. Some 7,500 people may be served as a result of the race.   Funds were also collected to benefit the families of New York City Fire Department victimized by the September 11 attack on the U.S. Funds were also raised for the Arthritis Foundation, Connecticut Children's Medical Center Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the American Diabetes Association.

About 6,000 competed in the marathon's eighth running, under warm sunny skies. Race organizers said pre-registration had been especially robust this year. They added, however, that there far more "no shows" this year than before due perhaps to the recent terrorists' attacks, but that runners from 42 states, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Chile, Finland, German, Hungary, Kenya, Russia and over 90 Connecticut towns and cities participated.
