HARTFORD - OCTOBER 14, 2001 (Reuben Chesang, a 38 year-old
Kenyan now of Chapel Hill N.C. broke out quickly Saturday morning to easily take the Aetna
Greater Hartford Marathon title and a check for $6,000 while defeating his closest rival
by over four minutes. Chesang, from Nakuru, Kenya, won with a 2:19:01 time. The
course record 2:16:59 was set in 1997 by Simon Peter.
The race helps feed Thanksgiving dinners to one person in need for each runner and
volunteer at Saturday's marathon. Some 7,500 people may be served as a result of the race.
Funds were also collected to benefit the families of New York City Fire Department
victimized by the September 11 attack on the U.S. Funds were also raised for the Arthritis
Foundation, Connecticut Children's Medical Center Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society and the American Diabetes Association.
Brazil's Luiz Ramos ran second at 2:23:19 and Wilson Kagiri of East Brunswick, N.J. ran
third (2:28:00). Twenty four bands performed along the 26.2 mile course with over 10
parties in full swing along the route. A free concert was held downtown after the race.
Ludmilla Kortchaguina, 30, of Orol, Russia won the women's marathon 2:39:35), easily
defeating her countryman and good friend, Tatiana Maslova (2:43:56) and fellow countryman
Alena Vinitskaya (2:44:26).
Mike Owens, 28, of Goshen, CT (2:35:57) and Mary Dunn, 49, of Cheshire, CT (3:00:30) were
the top Connecticut marathon finishers. Each was presented with the Advest Mercury
Portfolio, a prize of leading marathon sponsor's stocks valued at about $1,000.
Gabriel Muchiri, a 23 year old Kenyan, briefly ran off the half marathon course onto
the marathon course then retraced his steps to go on and win the half marathon (13.1
miles) in 1:06:20. Tomix Costa (1:07:26) ran second while Bryce Lyindmood of New Haven ran
third (1:08:03).
Tammy Slusser, 36, of Monroeville, PA returned to Hartford to win the women's half
marathon in 1:20:06. She has finished with top ten marathon finishes in the
preceding three years. Melissa Perkins-Banas, of Norwich (CT) ran second (1:21:05) and
Lisa Vaill, 38, of Pine Plains, N.Y. finished third (1:21:14).
Two Amherst (MA.) runners battled for the Huck Finn 5K (3.1 miles) honors
Erik Nedeau, 30, ran a 15:05 while Paul Low finished second (15:08). Chris Chisholm, 39,
of Farmington (CT) ran third (1541).
About 6,000 competed in the marathon's eighth running, under warm sunny skies. Race
organizers said pre-registration had been especially robust this year. They added,
however, that there far more "no shows" this year than before due perhaps to the
recent terrorists' attacks, but that runners from 42 states, Austria, Belarus, Brazil,
Canada, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Chile, Finland, German, Hungary, Kenya, Russia and
over 90 Connecticut towns and cities participated.
