Gancher beats Quist, Freeman beats Everyone

Kyle Gancher must have felt like one of those characters in a cartoon, when the shadow of the anvil appears, and she knows that in two seconds she's going to be crushed.  There she was, fighting her way up the long South Street hill past the four mile mark, and the shadow was Pam Quist, always strong on the hills, lurking just a few dozen yards back.  This time, though, the anvil missed.  For the first time in several years, Pam didn't catch Kyle, and Kyle held on for a 29 second victory.

Among the men, for the second week in a row, the Old Fossil Ed Sandifer led with half a mile to go, and his ancient legs couldn't carry him through for the win.  This week, his nemesis was New Milford Junior Jon Freeman, running one last tune up race before the high school cross country season begins later this week.  It had been an exciting race.  Nearly a dozen people were together at the mile mark in 6:17.  The pack thinned to just six as they started up the difficult hill on Apple Lane.  Half of that field got fooled by the false top half way up the hill.  They emitted a collective anguished gasp, as Freeman and Sandifer followed JT Schemm off the front of the groupl

Schemm dominated the action through the third mile, but wilted when the long down hill ended.  It was Sandifer's race for the next mile and a half as they fought their way back up that South Street hill that Kyle Gancher hates so much.  Several times, it looked like Freeman was going to let him get away, as the race was getting a little long for him, but Sandifer wasn't able to deliver the killing attack.  When they turned the corner onto Apple Lane, Freeman's 800 meter experience paid off and he surged away to a 10 second win.

JT Schemm held on for third place, just ahead of a pack of three more New Milford XC'ers who all finished in the space of just 26 seconds.   Three more finished a minute later in places ten to twelve in the space of just 13 seconds.  Running like a pack of wolves like that could make them a pretty tough team this season.  Keep an eye on them.
