 Oppressive heat did nothing to deter the competitive drive
of a spirited group of runners, both children and adult in the
9th running of the NICK BOTTONE TRACK MILE in Westerly.
 The Westerly High School Track was absolutely (Lit-Up) as
The four year old mens' record was shattered in the Elite Race.
Tyler McCabe of Providence College, set a blistering pace and
was never headed as he lowered the standard by more than 12
seconds with a clocking of 4:21.7. McCabe, a member of PC's
top 10 nationally ranked cross country and track teams was
looking to stay sharp in the off-season and was in perfect
rythm with his top performance. Stephen Herrera, of Waterford,
CT, one of the region's top road racers with a bevy of wins to
his credit, was also in under the old mark with a time of 4:33
.1. (The previous record of 4:34 was run by Spyros Barres of
Mystic in 1998). Westerly High School running star, Daniel
Sieczkiewicz was a solid third in 4:39.5.
  The womens' Elite Race featured a spirited battle, with
Stonington Track & Cross Country asst. coach Julie Robinson
coming out on top with a time of 6:02.3. She was followed by
01' Bottone Mile winner Diane Kodama in 6:16.9. Jan McLaughlin
ran a 6:26 to round out a brisk top 3 finish.
