Leftovers Romp

The annual Team Race was a great success this year.  The rules changed slightly, allowing four people per team instead of three as we have done in the past.  People formed teams all different ways.  The Levy family, of course, formed a family of Levy's, but they had to leave someone off the team, since there were five of them.  Mom (Janet) reluctantly agreed.  Bob Lewis, Katie Neils and Ed Sandifer had been a team for several years in a row, so they recruited Dave DeBoy as a fourth.  Others were teams of friends, or family.  When eight teams had been formed, four people remained, just like in high school gym class.  Those four were Mike Abraham, JT Schemm, Sean Murphy and Chris Childs, popular fellows all, even if some of them are high school teachers.

Of course, this team of leftovers won the race, though by just 22 seconds over a team of old friends, Bob Derringer, Paul Teixeira, Gregg Scribner and Ken Merrick.

In the individual race, the trio of favorites, Mike Abraham, Bob Derringer and JT Schemm broke to an early lead.  Each has had a major change in his life recently.  Mike got married earlier this month, the day after JT had his first child, young Jonas Bruce, and Keyless boB has a really fast and hot new pair of racing shoes.  Despite all this personal change, they all ran well.  JT and Mike seem to have dropped Bob going up the hill, but Old Keyless fought back to grab second place and relegate poor JT to third.  Mike won, with a rare time under 14 minutes on the course.

Farther back, many people in the crowd noticed that they were ahead of Fossil for much of the early part of the race, and were amazed that Fossil salvaged a comeback to finish a decent fifth, losing a sprint for fourth place to a much younger Vernon LeRoux.  Fossil wasn't born yesterday, you know.  He knew a lot of people ere going out way too fast, and so he took it easy for the first part of the race.

Welcome back to our long absent friends Ken Merrick and Vernon LeRoux, each missing since March or April.  Ken has been battling injury and Lyme disease, while Vern told a story, something about being held captive in Maryland by the IRS.  Better ask him about it, because I'm not sure we got the story straight.
